How to Throw a 30 something Birthday Party

Eeeps! It’s almost my birthday! I get really really excited to celebrate my birthday. I know lots of people dread the day that marks them as another year older, especially when you’re 30 something or up, but I can’t help but celebrate that fact that I’m still here, stronger and smarter than before… it’s basically an excuse to celebrate the best you there is to date!

This year I had an elaborate plan for a theme that didn’t pan out. I really needed a space to host my idea to get the idea fully formed and since that didn’t come through I was back at the drawing board. But since I love celebrating my birthday so much and I love planning parties, it wasn’t really a big deal having to start fresh. In fact, I think it’s going to be even better!

I just sat down this weekend and really started planning it out! I created a new Pinterest board to narrow down my ideas. I already have a fun party themed board full of ideas, but this new board served as focused inspiration. Pins were added and removed with gusto until it started forming my idea.

So here is my inspo for my 30 something birthday, 34 to be exact, but I think it’s fun for anyone wanting to have a fun spin on a “grown up” b-day party. Hell, I hope if you’re 40 something , 50 something or 80 something, you take inspiration from this post! There is no reason just because we’re grown ups that it doesn’t mean we can’t still have a fun and frivolous party… on a dime at that!

So my plans included celebrating things that make me, me! I love cats, so I’m gonna take a stab at making a similar kitty cake. I like this design, because it looks relatively easy to replicate or take my own spin on it.

I love having photo props available as it really encourages people to snap some fun pics of the party. I often get too wrapped up in setting up, then making sure people are settled and then enjoying the party myself, I often forget to grab my own. I think I’ll also set up a hashtag to go along with the party so I can have a collection if people post to instagram or even facebook! Since I dye my hair fun crazy colours I’ve already begun making brightly coloured, sparkly beehive photo props, along with sparkly breads and bows well.

I worked for 4 years at a party decor and costume shop and though I know many of my old colleagues shudder at the thought of balloons { especially after working just one New Years, oh my goodness, you get sore fingers from tying off thousands of balloons for that holiday, and that is NOT an exaggeration! } but I still have a fondness for them, so I’m going to have a few cute shiny, mylar balloon shapes as well! We’ll see what the cats think of them!

I also like to bake and have afternoon tea, so I thought I’ll make some homemade ice tea blends and some strawberry cream cheese cookies to go with. And I am a HUGE fan of cocktails, especially ones that involve bubbly, so we’ll be setting up a mimosa bar! Fun juice combos and popsicles will be featured as well as some gin and some home made simple syrups so I can make a few French 75’s.

I’ll also have the makings for some Italian sodas, Shirley Temples and a tray full of birthday cake inspired shots! I think the light will be burning a littler brighter after a few of those!

We’ve also been going bananas on salad rolls from our fav Vietnamese restaurant that is right down the block from us. So I’m going to be making some fun, bright coloured vegetable and fruit salad rolls with homemade satay sauce for dipping, nomm nomm nomm.

So this birthday really is just a celebration of a few of my most favourite things and it all culminates in a great way to celebrate one year getting older, but also one year still here, a privilege not afforded to everyone. So why not have a giggle with friends and knock back a few drinks?

Please feel free to follow along on my either my it’s my party or my 30 something birthday party Pinterest boards!

Can you come to Australia and plan my wedding party please? (We got married last month in New Zealand but are having a wedding party here for everyone in Australia.) I hate planning parties so much and never want to do it again. Your planning and ideas look amazing!

This sounds like it’s going to be THE fete of the season. Too bad I’m on the other side of the country. And I will also be attempting that cat cake for my next birthday (in vegan green tea flavour, natch).
