outfit | to the maxi

I just have to take a moment and praise the wonderfulness that is the maxi dress!!

Maxi dresses are truly a blessing, especially as the summertime heat starts rolling in. Not only are they fashionable and chic, but they are comfortable as all hell and versatile to boot! You can go from beach day to wedding night with the right maxi dress and feel like you’re cheating the whole time because you will be so damn comfortable!

maxi – Ross {old} | flip flops – superstore for $2 last summer | denim vest – old navy

This is not a new maxi for me, this one has been in my arsenal for a few years now. I picked it up in a Ross when I was down in Portland { ..or maybe Seattle?? } and have loved it to pieces since. It’s been worn braless to just kick around the house, it’s been worn to picnics and backyard BBQ’s and yes, it has been worn to a wedding!

I adore the print, it’s one of the few items I own with a print, it has some amazingly placed pleats under the bust that make this dress drape uber flatteringly over wide hips and tummy’s alike and IT. HAS. POCKETS!! Every dress and every pair of pants, should have pockets! I mean, look how excited we get every time….and not fake teeny tiny pockets, real ones, that we can put stuff into!!

Back to the dress though….It all has to do with how you style it up. Flip flops and a denim vest says, super casual afternoon walk about. A pashmina, some bangles and a nice sandal can say summer time wedding! BOOM!

I do admit, I am a bit modest with my chest. It’s honestly my biggest insecurity. I hate how out there & in your face the girls always are, so I elect to wear a bandeau or tube top underneath anything with a plunging neckline purely for my own comfort. This dress really does look stellar without the bandeau as well and I think this neckline looks fab on everyone, as I said, just my own damn insecurities getting in the way.

So since I can’t link to this dress, I decided I would do a round up of some of my current fav maxis out on the market, ranked from most affordable to most expensive { hey, we can dream, right?! }

shopping guide | to the maxi

I know I’m going to start sounding like a broken record, but I’d just die of excitement if you signed up for my newsletter! { okay, I won’t die, but every time one of you signs up, I do a lil happy dance and squee!! } It will be a monthly round up of what I’ve been up to all around the interwebs as well as items I find fascinating and if special promotions, announcements or collaborations are in the works, you will be the FIRST to know!

PS…here’s some bonus selfies of my husband and I while out and about for Victoria Day, we had screamers and sat in the park listening to music! Here;s hoping my American friends have a stellar Memorial Day long weekend coming up!

In keeping with my tradition when I participate in the #alternativecurves blog hop, I’m squeaking this in the nick of time!

This months theme is “black lipstick” now we had this planned months ago and I truly honestly thought I would have purchased myself several black lipsticks to feature for this post, but alas, it has not come to fruition….so I winged it!

I ended up using my black gel eyeliner, which in truth looks like a really awesome matte black lippie.  I’m so happy, it looks great on.  I had hoped to share my thoughts on a few brands, but you know, best laid plans!

oh my stars!  Thank you all so much for all the love from my first tutu post { bold }.  I was really stepping out of my comfort zone with all that ‘non black’ happening, haha!!

In keeping with my how to rock a tutu theme leading up to my birthday I have yet another look for you!

Today’s foray into tutu-ness is definitely within my comfort zone, it’s actually flashing back to my rock n roll roots.  Though I no longer wear this studded belt I could never give it up, it used to be an everyday staple in my wardrobe, not to mention studded bracelets and well, studded everything.  I haven’t grown out of loving studs, I just incorporate them into my outfits differently. But this was a fun flash back and homage to my style in my early 20’s.

This one is dedicated to all my punk rock princesses who don’t ever want to grow up.

For this look, I decided to play up the hard vs soft as much as I possibly could.  So I paired the now chopped tutu with pink metallic Doc Martens, my very old and worn down studded belt, a denim vest decked out in my favourite buttons and a solid black crop.

My next tutu outfit is completely different!! Keep your eyes out for it later this week!!

Happy April!!!

I simply adore April, there are flowers popping up everywhere, all the green is returning to barren branches, the days are getting longer and brighter, and there is the promise of lazy days spent outside with friends and drinks.

April is also my birth month and my birthday is only ten days away!! EEEP!

So I’m gonna shake things up with something a little different, I’m going to do a series on how to style a tutu leading up to my birthday.

Today I am featuring COLOUR!  Like, there is almost zero black, so this is definitely a shake up!

I was gifted this A-MA-ZING tulle tutu from that lovely gals over at Cool Gal clothing { you may remember me featuring their Valentine lookbook back in Feb }.

This first look popped right into my head when I saw the length of the skirt.  It screamed “pair me with a crop top!”, though in all honestly, I want to pair almost everything with a crop top.

When it was sent to me, I was told it was long and that other bloggers had DIY’d & customized it for themselves.  But I really wanted to feature how beautiful it is in it’s full length before I took the scissors to it.

{ top & blazer are from last year }

I elected to over accessorize with bright chunky bangles and a bright blue, shiny, skinny belt to polish the waistband, I added my teal blazer for some structure { and a layer as it’s not warm enough for just the crop yet } a black lace statement necklace & a bright red lip.

I won this top from Zelie for She on an instagram contest along with some other really amazing items { remember my black rose dress, I can’t wait for summer so I can bring it back out of the closet!! }.  I really loved this top when it arrived, but had yet to reconcile how to work it into my wardrobe. This was a fun experiment in wearing it and now I have a few other ideas on how I’ll try it as the summer approaches.

This tutu is really versatile, I’ve now chopped it to a tea length, but I think it could be used at any length as a really great piece in a prom or wedding dress.  Imagine it styled with a gorgeous lace or sequins top…ugh, so amazing and affordable!!

Keep your eye out  later this week for this tutu styled a completely different way and a new length!

This weekend I finally took advantage of a gift certificate given to me by my sister for x-mas to go for afternoon tea.

Mister Meanie and I thoroughly enjoyed all the tasty decedent nibbles, he sipped on black tea, while I opted to upgrade to some matcha, as I really love it and I don’t get to indulge in it often enough.  { photos of our afternoon tea are below }

It was also the perfect outing to rock my brand new shawl { cape, wrap? } which I had just scored at the thrift shop the day before.

Though I don’t always find clothing while I thrift, I always have luck with accessories and shoes.  I whole heartrendingly recommend giving thrifting a try, especially for trendy pieces you don’t want to break the bank over.  I’ve found clutches, platform shoes, metallic belts and an array of vintage hats in my journeys.  My next item I’m on the hunt for is a fringed leather { or leather look }  bag, I’m really feeling fringe and I predict it is going to explode before the summer.

wrap – thrifted | crop – f21+ | skirt – the curvy elle | shoes – similar modcloth & urbanog

I also decided to rock a monochrome oxblood combo, with my f21+ cutout crop top & my velvet midi which I got from online plus size thrifting guru The Curvy Elle.

Online is another really great way to thrift while being plus size.  There are oodles of shops online through etsy or their own independent websites, where they curate excellent thrifted and vintage plus pieces. { the curvy elle & ursa major plus are two of my favourites!}

It’s a great way to save a buck, support a small business and be environmental all at the same time!

Do you ever thrift or do you have tips or favourite online thrift shops you’d like to recommend?? please let me know in the comments!

For now, I will leave you will some photos of our afternoon tea, make sure you’ve eaten first, or else you’ll be hungry!

outfit | I shall wear midnight

Yesterday I was knocked off my feet with sad news of the passing of an author that is very dear to my heart.  Sir Terry Prachett created one of my all time favourite worlds in his Discworld series.  He brought entire worlds and gods { though they were small } to life, he satirized and made commentary on many tricky subjects.  He had an amazing vision and an enormous sense of humour.

I Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry Pratchett

He tickled my fancy.

He made me laugh on public transit many a time.  In fact, I found common bonds form with strangers.  Either you would see strangers or they would see you reading one of his books and there would be a slight understanding and appreciation of good people.  You’d give each other a quite nod and smile, acknowledging the wonderfulness of his worlds that exists in those pages.

I often greet the news of celebrity death with a somber, yet cool manner.  I mean, it saddens me, but generally doesn’t ruin my day.  That cannot be said about Terry Pratchett, I found myself brought to tears multiple times throughout the day as memorials and articles were posted on social media.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

He wrote over 40 books that exist on the flat planet { which rests on the backs of four elephants, which in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle floating through space } known as Discworld.  I would have to say that the Moist Von Lipwig books are my favourite, they are also the some of the most recent, but honestly, there are so many good books, story lines and characters, it’s hard to pick which to recommend first. { Don’t be daunted by the whole ’40 books in a series’ thing, they are pretty much all stand alone books and you can really start anywhere.  Though there are guides if you are interested in delving into the world that is Discworld, but I think they make it look more complicated than it is.  I personally have only read about 10 – 15 of them and in any damn order I felt like. }

I Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI Shall Wear Midnight | A Tribute to Terry PratchettI chose to share this outfit post today because I can think nothing better than expressing myself through two of my favourite mediums, fashions and books.  The title of one of his books was just so fitting, “I shall wear midnight” is based on a young witch named Tiffany Aching.  I feel like I’m rocking a bit of modern witch looks here, Deathly Hallows mark included { interesting tidbit: Terry Pratchett is the second most read UK author, behind J.K. Rowling }

It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It’s called living.

For now, I will busy myself with re-reading some old favourites as well as catching up on some of the books I have yet to read.

He will be missed, but his creations live on and that is comforting.

Are you a Pratchett fan?  Or better yet, who are your favourite authors & books?

outfit | wednesday

Do you have any youtube shows you obsess over?  I recently discovered Melissa Hunter and her Adult Wednesday Addams series.  OB-SESSED!

I strongly recommend checking out the videos, they’re all short, funny & morbid.  I watched them all in one sitting and then watched them all a second time around when I *made* Mister Meanie watch them. { I’ll post one at the very bottom }

Anyhoo, I went off the the Island to visit my Father-in-Law for his birthday this past weekend.  It was absolutely lovely in Nanaimo so we went for a seaside stroll.  I wore a slightly Wednesday-ish get up and couldn’t help but notice a few of the locals gawk.  { Now, I am friends with plenty of strange girls that hail for Nanaimo, so I know the locals should be used to off beat style, but I guess some of the older more traditional folk still need to get their stare on or they just haven’t learned how to gawk discreetly like Vancouvrites do. }

I have been wanting a Wednesday dress forever, in fact a collection of varying styles of Wednesday dresses would please me greatly.  Sadly, every time I see one pop up in a shop, I either don’t have the funds to get it or it has already sold out of my size. Blerg!

One day, while cleaning out my closet, I put two items in the get ‘rid of pile’, when I realised I could layer them to create my own cute collared dress they quickly returned to the ‘keep pile’.  I am so happy I kept them!  I have now gotten multiple wears out of these two pieces which I haven’t really been worn in months.  Sometimes it pays to be ruthless with your closet and really look at all the items you have and to question their place and if one piece can serve multiple purposes.

{ somewhat related, I am planning on having a closet sale soon, I just have to photograph the mountain of clothes, which is a daunting task!  I have lots of clothing up for grabs with a few items spanning back almost 10 years, but they are classic pieces like jackets & coats, the type of things that don’t go out of style. I also have, dresses, blouses, skirts and some jeans that have either been gently or never been worn.  I plan to have it open to worldwide shipping, which will take some math and planning.  Are you interested in shopping my closet? which would be your preferred route to shop it? I was thinking of just doing up an instagram page or a creating an online shop, like on shopify, any advice or suggestions are greatly welcome! }
