There is something about a dress that can make it look like you put a lot of thought and effort into creating an outfit, when really, you just threw it on.

Today I am rocking one of my fav pieces to wear, the shirt dress.

This particular shirt dress is from Ross, I can’t remember if it’s from the one in downtown Seattle or downtown Portland.  I always seem to have luck in Ross, I will almost always find something and it will be dirt cheap.  I believe this dress was $13.

Whenever I’m in the states, I make an effort to find a Ross or Marshalls, as they usually have cheap plus items, though the selections in the Seattle and Portland store where significantly smaller then the massive selections and finds to that of the Ross on the Las Vegas strip {that store is CRAZY, I once bought 3 Betsey Johnson purses for $5-15 each and got two cocktail dresses, one was $11 and one was on sale for $7…is that not ridiculous?!!}

But back to this dress.  This is a shirt dress and I just love how versatile this style can be.  It makes a lovely daytime dress, can be professional looking for an office or an interview and can be jazzed up with some jewelry and some bangin shoes for a dinner out.

I usually opt to leave the top buttons undone on this, but I was feeling it all buttoned up the other day.  I also like the straps to hold the sleeves up if you choose to roll them up, but there is a nice double button detail if you choose to wear the sleeves down.

I’m also wearing my New Look Inspire waterfall jacket {from last year, here’s a similar one} which you have seen on me oodles of times now.  It’s just a perfect jacket, especially for Vancouver.  Here I am in the middle of January and this was all the jacket I needed for our weather lately.  I like that I can layer a hoodie or sweater easily underneath to warm it up and it still looks rad!

ASOS curve fit & flare coat and ASOS curve pleated leggings // margot meanieTo be honest, it wasn’t actually cold enough to be wearing my winter coat.  It’s been a pretty balmy winter here.  We’ve had some chilly nights and we had a day or two of snow back in November, but it wasn’t more than a slight dusting.

Often when people hear I’m in Canada they hope I’m keeping warm, which is kinda funny as that is exactly why I moved to Vancouver on the Pacific coast away from the freezing temperatures of Calgary just on the other aide of the Rocky mountains.  Vancouver has very mild winters, though they are wet ones.  Sometimes the wet seeps into your bones and 0°C can feel a whole lot colder.

But this year hasn’t had the thermometer drop below 5°very often, in fact, when I took these photos, it was 11°C {52°F}!

I just couldn’t resist grabbing some photos though!  I’ve been sick for the better part of a month now and I’m finally feeling back on track.

So while I was feeling better I kind of forced my husband to take photos.  He’s such a trooper, as he’s not feeling as well as I am yet, but he still managed to photograph three different outfits for me all while I got my bossy pants on telling him what I wanted photographed and how I wanted them framed.

He’s pretty wonderful!

Though it is not very cold out, it does get a bit chilly at night, which is when I would normally wear this coat, but nighttime does not make for good photos.

Here I am wearing my ASOS curve fit & flare coat and my ASOS curve pleated leggings.  This pair of leggings is about two years old now, so they’ve lost all of their leathery look they had when I first got them, but I still love them to bits {like literally, I will wear them until they fall part!}.  Though it is great that they have been a staple in the curve line so I really should get on buying a couple of back up pairs!

The shoes are thrifted and totally fabulous! These photos don’t quite capture it, but they are faux suede with mirco sparkle buttons attaching the straps…they are simply divine.

gold lion’s gonna tell me where the light is

margot meanie

this is just a quick ‘hello!’ of an outfit post.  I’ve been a busy bee with the holidays arriving what with crafting, baking, decorating, making gift guides and birthdays I have been absent from taking outfit photos.

So this is from Sunday when I went down to a craft fare with Mister Meanie and one of my favourite couples to hang with, Amanda & Amelia.  After the market, we stopped in a beer tasting room for some samples and then split off to do some x-mas shopping.

This spot seemed ideal for a quick photo session so I asked the mister to take some photos before the light was gone.

Trying to get photos with the waning light has been a struggle.  It’s on the weekend or not at all and if the weather is wet, it ends up being not at all.

I can’t really link to anything I’m wearing as it’s either older, vintage,  thrifted or from Ross in Las Vegas.  But the skirt and hat are both from Forever21, but the skirt is a few years old meow and the hat is well over a year old at this point.  the jacket is by New Look from ASOS last year there are similar ones in stock though {here & here}

I’m really hoping for some snow, but it’s incredibly unlikely in this part of Canada.  We only get a few weeks at best, but if we do get it, you better believe I’ll be out there in a heartbeat trying to get multiple outfit sets.

I’ve been waist deep in luck lately and I’m extremely grateful for it!

I have been lucky to win quite a few contests online.  I had great luck finding some bitchin’ shoes whilst thrifting and I was lucky to be invited to Vancouver Alternative Fashion Weekend, which took place, this past weekend.

It was an awe inspiring event, full of couture, music, art and performances.  I came away feeling immensely inspired not to mention impressed.

It’s extremely satisfying seeing friends and local artisans succeed, which pretty much sums up the event, a success!  My pal, Samantha Stroman, floored the crowd with her beautiful, elegant and inventive line!  Next week I will be featuring images from the runway, I can’t wait to share!

Today, I will share with you what I wore on the Friday evening.

I scored the adorable cut out back crop top from Forever21+ for super cheap, {I bought it in burgundy as well! } and the skirt is also from forever21+ but is a few months old now.

Those amazing sparkly shoes? Those are awesome shoes No. 2 I found with my thrifting karma!  So pretty!  It looks like they were originally sold through Urban Outfitters, the brand is Kimchi Blue and there are colour variations available online through ebay for resale.  The clutch was another score from my thrifting trip.  I love that it’s big enough to fit my ipad mini in it.

But the BEST part of this outfit is this freaking GORGEOUS Noir Fringed Kimono from Addition Elle.  This is the second item I purchased with my winnings from the lovely Liz Black and her month of giveaways on her fabulous blog  P.S. It’s Fashion

Not only is the kimono super trendy right now, but it’s super versatile.  It can take any outfit to dressy in an instant!

It has some really beautiful detailing, including a fringe that runs under the arms, but the burn out in the back is really amazing!  Its way more beautiful in person than when how I saw it online!

I love it!

The weather has been getting chilly.  I am by no means complaining as it’s still quite calm and resembles Fall outside my window.  Meanwhile other areas of Canada are complaining of bitter cold and snow.

So the months #untamedstyle theme was completely in step with how I’ve been feeling, which is cozy.

Cozy to me is blankets and hot beverages, over sized sweaters, tights, fuzzy socks and fuzzy friends to snug with.

My tights are from forever21+, they always have them so cheap there, though I do admit to usually having to patch the upper inseam at least once per pair. The sweater is from a friend, but the brand is Iron Fist, I love those guys, I wore a pair of their shoes for my wedding!

ooh, don’t I just feel like a fairy tale princess in this fabulous dress….albeit a gothy looking one.  Especially with my new black hair and my choice in the darkest of purple lipsticks.

Late in the summer I was fortunate enough to win some items from the indie design label Zelie for She through an instagram contest.  I received them in September and kept meaning to get photos but I was struggling with light in my apartment.  So I finally took to the outdoors to get some witchy photos.

This here is the “Dark Rose” dress that was part of her summer line.  I’m ecstatic that this is one of the items I received as it was my hands down favourite piece! Underneath is an orange pencil skirt also by her.  I figured the orange and black were a perfect pairing for this time of year!

I think my favourite part of this dress is not just the edgy design or the fabulous sheer fabric, but the voluminous skirt!  This skirt makes you want to TWIRL.  I get excited when there’s a gust of wind because this dress looks FIERCE all puffed up with wind! And I really like having to grab handfuls of the fabric to walk up stairs, that is probably the most princess-y feeling ever!

Zelie for She now has a new line out called Dark Romance and it’s just perfect for fall! I love the colours and the textures!

Love This Sunday // margot meanie

Love This Sunday // margot meanie

I often wear a lot of black, so much so, that I even made it my blogs tagline.  But that doesn’t stop me from still being playful with colour!  I do love surprising people with wearing tons of cute colours paired with sweet accessories and bright make-up. {though I did still manage to pack a lot of black in this outfit anyway!}

This week I’m wearing a cheeky jelly bean swimsuit gifted from Love This Sunday.  They are a kitschy fun swimwear company that just recently expanded their sizing up to a 3x!!!

To celebrate the new size range, they invited me to pick one of their suits and style it in my own way that could be worn year round.

Now, they have some freakin’ CUTE prints which made it hard to pick; french fries, hamburgers, breakfast food bikini’s..to die for!! But when my eye rested on the Jelly Bean one piece I was purely smitten!

Love This Sunday // margot meanie

Love This Sunday // margot meanie

I was super impressed with the colour and quality of material when I first opened my parcel, but then a little concerned that perhaps the print on the suit would look broken or washed out once it was on me.  Happily, it didn’t it held up beautifully and vibrantly!  I ordered the 3x and it fits quite nice, but I am a very busty gal and it sits a wee low on the décolletage, so I plan to wear a bright coloured bandeau when I go swimming in it.  I really love the low scoop on the back as well!

I’m very happy with this swimsuit and super stoked to jump in my friends pool with it on!

Things to keep in mind:

I ordered the 3x, I am an 18/20 US and it just fits me.  It’s not going to fit on much larger bodies sadly though if you are smaller in the bust it should work if you’re a size larger. Hopefully these will be a wild success and maybe  they’ll include more sizes again!! It does not have any support for the girls, so if you are larger busted, you may need to wear a bra or add a bandeau for modesty or comfort.

But I must say it again, the print is the CUTEST and the quality is aces!!  I love this suit and I Love This Sunday! <3

what I wore:

//sheer black blouse – Ross {in Las Vegas}

//bandage skirt – Torrid {several years old, but it still holds up!}

//hot pink & silver T-strap flats – Buffalo Exchange {Portland}

//meringue earrings – Insanely Sweet Jewelry on etsy {these wear my wedding earrings!!}
