guide | 5 ways to rock a crop top this summer

It’s hard for me to believe that just last year I bought my very first crop top. Especially when I look at my wardrobe now, and what I wear on the regular, crop tops reign supreme!

But that doesn’t mean that I instantly felt at ease while rocking a short top with a round belly!

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

Since it’s now Summer all over the Northern Hemisphere and people are melting away in the heat, we all need fashionable ways to keep cool!

It brings me immense joy seeing more and more plus sized bodies throwing caution to the wind and taking fashion risks we have been told over and over never to take. But I know so many still wanting to wade in to the fun, but are nervous or feel too self conscious and need a comfortable, safe way to try out such a daring garment.

Here is my plus girls guide on how to introduce crop tops into your wardrobe and move them into your comfort zone! Because Crop tops are for every BODY!

1. the non-committal crop or faux crop:

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

The first time I unveiled a crop on my body was actually here on the blog. I hadn’t had the guts to wear one outside, hell I didn’t even own one yet. But I took my very old Metallica muscle shirt and folded the bottom half up and under.

I wore this while singing and dancing around my house to Whitney Houston and I was feeling pretty good with myself. Then I took some photos and blasted them up on my blog. I was nervous, but I also I adored how it looked! I got a positive response and I immediately felt a bit better about rocking a crop.

I didn’t have to commit to running out and buying a crop top or chopping an old favourite tee into a crop right away. And when I finally did wear this out { later that day } I knew I had the option to flip the bottom down if I ever felt too self conscious.

2. Add a fashionable security blanket:

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

A cardigan, blazer, kimono or vest can all be a life saver when wading into crop tops. Not only do they act as water wings, but they can also add some styling fun to your whole outfit!

I found that I was completely A-OK with showing the front of my stomach, but the sides and back is where I was most nervous. I mean, you can’t see those parts of you on the regular, so baring them to the public is definitely and understandably on the scary side.

I opted to wear a light, sheer kimono or and edgy, slouchy vest with my very first crops. This didn’t add any heat to the outfit and made me feel like I was just accessorizing. Even though I was also protecting myself as I continued to dip my toes into the crop top pool.

This left the cute little square of tummy out for viewing while the outer garment would still move and provide peeks of my stomach. It just helped me feel more confident. It also gives you the option to take off the item if you are too warm and really feeling yourself!

3. Tie up blouses to crop them:

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

This works right along with the non committal/faux crop as all you have to do is take an existing button up blouse and tie it up under your bust.

It gives you the option to untie if you’re not feeling it. But in all honestly, I always feel pretty damn hot in this look. Especially when it’s one of my sheer blouses. The tie in the front makes me feel retro and sexy!

4. Wear a lace undershirt:

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

This is a great way to really get comfortable in a crop top as you are showing skin, but you are still covered. And boy -o-boy, it feels good to have lil’ peeks of black lace!

This was definitely one of my go to’s for feeling comfortable and eventually rocking bare skin under my crops. But I do think it still looks really great so I rock it on occasion!

5. Pair high waisted or full bodied skirts:

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

I found my favourite item to pair a crop with was a high waisted skirt. Particularly a maxi skirt or a full a-line or circle type skirt. In fact, this is one of my staple looks now!

There is something so balancing of a teeny crop top matched with a long or full skirt on the bottom. I think it suits all body types and it just gives that teeny sliver of skin all the way around. But there is something about this combo that makes me feel all powerful!

a plus girls guide: 5 ways to rock a crop top | margot meanie

This right here ^^^ was my very first crop top I bought. I was nervous buying it at a comicon, but I felt this need to get one. I had been experimenting with all of the above faux crops and I was feeling it! And I am a HUGE Harry Potter nerd { as, I am sure, you are all abundantly aware of by now! } But it was a one size deal and I wasn’t sure if:

  1. would fit me
  2. would look any good
  3. would I feel comfortable in it

The girl selling them was herself a fantastically stylish and gothy plus size gal. She assured me, she rocked these all the time and that it would fit me. It just so turns out that the girl selling me the crop was none other than Alyssa PandaEyes, one of my fav IG girls to follow now!

Well, I hope these tips will help you try something new this Summer! It’s been just over a year for me now and I cannot believe how it doesn’t even phase me anymore. Confidence is a funny little thing that creeps up on you.

much love!

I was gifted two amazing pieces from Candy Strike after the launch of her most recent collection. I’ve being wearing them since they arrived, but I had yet to figure how I wanted to present each piece here on the blog.

I mean, I could have just worn the two pieces together as is, but I kinda already shared that on IG last week. What I really wanted to do was show how I will integrate these two pieces into whole new outfits.

Today I am opting to show off the nevermore skater skirt. I paired it with my absolutely favourite sleeveless button up blouse. I ordered this online from forever 21 well over a year ago and it is still going strong as one of my most trusty staples.

I also wore this new blazer, which I nabbed in a contest hosted by the lovely Assa of my curves & curls, actually, it was a whole outfit {eeeeeee!!}. She had teamed up with Avenue to announce the addition of Canadian shipping to the site, which is always a welcome announcement. I am pretty stoked on this blazer, it fits over my bust without any weird pulling and it’s not boxy either! FTW!

Part of the win was this KICK ASS bag. Seriously, I’m so excited for it! It’s posh and the quality is really nice. It came with a long strap to wear over your shoulder and has a nice sturdy bottom inside for carrying around my water/straw cup without fear of it toppling over.

Keep your eyes out for me posting my second look on Friday!

Oh and my monthly newsletter should be headed out to your inboxes this Friday as well! Signing up is super cool!

My lovely friend gifted me this fabulous hi lo skirt she picked up from h&m last summer. And though I’m bummed it didn’t work out for her, am I ever glad she gave it to me!! I received so many compliments and I felt both ethereal and powerful with the way it caught the wind.

I totally heard the Imperial march from Star Wars in my head as walked about thrift shopping and then eventually down to Storm Brewing where we took these photos.

Let me just tell you real quick about Storm Brewing, they are Vancouver longest running craft brewery, they started waaaay way way before the craft brew boom hit Vancouver.  But not only are they fantastic and grungy and they stick rats on things { I’m standing in from of the rat mural that was a recent edition on the outside of the brewery } but the brew master is a little something of a mad scientist! If you get the chance, check out their facebook page to get a gander of some of the “brain storms” they create. We were headed down for the pineapple paradise pilsner, which is easily the tastiest beer I have ever tasted, but they also rock flavours like whiskey vanilla stout, mojito pils, and cinnamon bun ale. They sometimes have misses, but its worth it for the wins.

ok, enough about beer!!  Here are some of my scores from thrifting on Saturday! I couldn’t get them all, sadly the booties and kitties didn’t come home { the kitties broke my heart, as I’ve mentioned them on the blog before, but they were just a smidge too tight and life is too short for wearing shoes that will make your life hell } but I’m super happy with the three that did come home!

thrifted shoes

In other news, my Cool Gal Blue collection launches THIS FRIDAY!!! So be ready with your wallets come 5pm Eastern time! I am so very excited, the pieces are all so lovely!

Now, if you had signed up for my newsletter, { hint hint, wink wink } you would have been in the know already, but I forgive you! There is always the chance to sign up right meow! I promise not to litter your inbox, there will only be a few mailouts per month, but they will include some exclusive content or will be the first place I announce any big news! ;-)

outfit | to the maxi

I just have to take a moment and praise the wonderfulness that is the maxi dress!!

Maxi dresses are truly a blessing, especially as the summertime heat starts rolling in. Not only are they fashionable and chic, but they are comfortable as all hell and versatile to boot! You can go from beach day to wedding night with the right maxi dress and feel like you’re cheating the whole time because you will be so damn comfortable!

margot meanie | to the maxi margot meanie | to the maximargot meanie | to the maximargot meanie | to the maxi

maxi – Ross {old} | flip flops – superstore for $2 last summer | denim vest – old navy

This is not a new maxi for me, this one has been in my arsenal for a few years now. I picked it up in a Ross when I was down in Portland { ..or maybe Seattle?? } and have loved it to pieces since. It’s been worn braless to just kick around the house, it’s been worn to picnics and backyard BBQ’s and yes, it has been worn to a wedding!

I adore the print, it’s one of the few items I own with a print, it has some amazingly placed pleats under the bust that make this dress drape uber flatteringly over wide hips and tummy’s alike and IT. HAS. POCKETS!! Every dress and every pair of pants, should have pockets! I mean, look how excited we get every time….and not fake teeny tiny pockets, real ones, that we can put stuff into!!

Back to the dress though….It all has to do with how you style it up. Flip flops and a denim vest says, super casual afternoon walk about. A pashmina, some bangles and a nice sandal can say summer time wedding! BOOM!

I do admit, I am a bit modest with my chest. It’s honestly my biggest insecurity. I hate how out there & in your face the girls always are, so I elect to wear a bandeau or tube top underneath anything with a plunging neckline purely for my own comfort. This dress really does look stellar without the bandeau as well and I think this neckline looks fab on everyone, as I said, just my own damn insecurities getting in the way.

So since I can’t link to this dress, I decided I would do a round up of some of my current fav maxis out on the market, ranked from most affordable to most expensive { hey, we can dream, right?! }

shopping guide | to the maxi

I know I’m going to start sounding like a broken record, but I’d just die of excitement if you signed up for my newsletter! { okay, I won’t die, but every time one of you signs up, I do a lil happy dance and squee!! } It will be a monthly round up of what I’ve been up to all around the interwebs as well as items I find fascinating and if special promotions, announcements or collaborations are in the works, you will be the FIRST to know!

PS…here’s some bonus selfies of my husband and I while out and about for Victoria Day, we had screamers and sat in the park listening to music! Here;s hoping my American friends have a stellar Memorial Day long weekend coming up!

alternativecurves | black lips sink ships

In keeping with my tradition when I participate in the #alternativecurves blog hop, I’m squeaking this in the nick of time!

This months theme is “black lipstick” now we had this planned months ago and I truly honestly thought I would have purchased myself several black lipsticks to feature for this post, but alas, it has not come to fruition….so I winged it!

I ended up using my black gel eyeliner, which in truth looks like a really awesome matte black lippie.  I’m so happy, it looks great on.  I had hoped to share my thoughts on a few brands, but you know, best laid plans!

I do love participating in these challenges as they as just a great opportunity to play around and just have fun with the whole thing.  In the end, I’ve come up with a look that I would not mind flaunting while out at a burlesque show or some other fun weekend party night!

I think I may be the last person to be entering the hop for this month, but there is still 12 hours left to join!  Please check out what the rest of the babes participating in this months #alternativecurves blog hop or check us out on instagram and always feel free to use the hashtag for a chance to be featured!!

oh my stars!  Thank you all so much for all the love from my first tutu post { bold }.  I was really stepping out of my comfort zone with all that ‘non black’ happening, haha!!

In keeping with my how to rock a tutu theme leading up to my birthday I have yet another look for you!

Today’s foray into tutu-ness is definitely within my comfort zone, it’s actually flashing back to my rock n roll roots.  Though I no longer wear this studded belt I could never give it up, it used to be an everyday staple in my wardrobe, not to mention studded bracelets and well, studded everything.  I haven’t grown out of loving studs, I just incorporate them into my outfits differently. But this was a fun flash back and homage to my style in my early 20’s.

This one is dedicated to all my punk rock princesses who don’t ever want to grow up.

tutu – Cool Gal Clothing | crop – f21+ | vest – old navy | boots- doc martens { similar }

For this look, I decided to play up the hard vs soft as much as I possibly could.  So I paired the now chopped tutu with pink metallic Doc Martens, my very old and worn down studded belt, a denim vest decked out in my favourite buttons and a solid black crop.

My next tutu outfit is completely different!! Keep your eyes out for it later this week!!

Happy April!!!

I simply adore April, there are flowers popping up everywhere, all the green is returning to barren branches, the days are getting longer and brighter, and there is the promise of lazy days spent outside with friends and drinks.

April is also my birth month and my birthday is only ten days away!! EEEP!

So I’m gonna shake things up with something a little different, I’m going to do a series on how to style a tutu leading up to my birthday.

Today I am featuring COLOUR!  Like, there is almost zero black, so this is definitely a shake up!

Cool Gal x Zelie for She | margot meanie - alternative plus size style

Cool Gal x Zelie for She | margot meanie - alternative plus size style

I was gifted this A-MA-ZING tulle tutu from that lovely gals over at Cool Gal clothing { you may remember me featuring their Valentine lookbook back in Feb }.

This first look popped right into my head when I saw the length of the skirt.  It screamed “pair me with a crop top!”, though in all honestly, I want to pair almost everything with a crop top.

When it was sent to me, I was told it was long and that other bloggers had DIY’d & customized it for themselves.  But I really wanted to feature how beautiful it is in it’s full length before I took the scissors to it.

blazer – f21+ | top – Zelie for She | tulle skirt – c/o Cool Gal clothing | lips – Lime Crime

{ top & blazer are from last year }

I elected to over accessorize with bright chunky bangles and a bright blue, shiny, skinny belt to polish the waistband, I added my teal blazer for some structure { and a layer as it’s not warm enough for just the crop yet } a black lace statement necklace & a bright red lip.

I won this top from Zelie for She on an instagram contest along with some other really amazing items { remember my black rose dress, I can’t wait for summer so I can bring it back out of the closet!! }.  I really loved this top when it arrived, but had yet to reconcile how to work it into my wardrobe. This was a fun experiment in wearing it and now I have a few other ideas on how I’ll try it as the summer approaches.

This tutu is really versatile, I’ve now chopped it to a tea length, but I think it could be used at any length as a really great piece in a prom or wedding dress.  Imagine it styled with a gorgeous lace or sequins top…ugh, so amazing and affordable!!

Keep your eye out  later this week for this tutu styled a completely different way and a new length!
