riot grrl // margot meanie

I’m just squeezing this in before the time is up to enter this months #alternativecurve blog hop, phew!!

This months theme was “riot grrl heroines” and this one is pretty dear to my heart as riot grrl had a hefty hand in shaping my early self.

I came late to riot grrl, by the time I was aware of it, it was 2000/01, I had just graduated high school, I was 18 or 19 and just moved into the city, I was just getting into the internet as it wasn’t accessible out in the country where we lived {remember the glories of dial up?!} I had finally started downloading music and had found a treasure trove of goodness.  But, by the time I found anything “riot grrl” it had already packed up and gone home, or grown up, or what have you.  But, the music endured and I found it.

I loved nothing more than finding the loudest, angriest, nosiest rocked out all girl bands and making mix cds with Monty Python soundbites in between tracks, to listen to for my morning commute.   I discovered the music first and the movement second and I was swept away with both.

Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, Babes in Toyland, Bikini Kill Huggy bear, The Red Aunts, L7 {though they pre riot grrl, and more grunge, but I freakin loved them!!} the list goes on and on!  I just wanted to consume as much all grrrl rock I could handle.

riot grrl // margot meanie

But this post is about the fashion of riot grrl.  I have to admit to being a bit stumped on what I was going to wear.  I thought about all the popular styles of the time, but didn’t want to look like I was sporting a costume.  Then a few things donned on me.

  1. Riot grrls didn’t have one look, everyone wore whatever the hell they wanted to wear.  Some girls were super femme, others were tomboys.  Some put a lot of effort into their look, while for others it was an afterthought, or not a thought at all.  There was vintage aspects as well as modern {for the time} clothing.  There was a heavy grunge influence, because it was happening at the same time.

2.I am still a riot grrl.  I am just a grown up riot grrl.  In fact, I think what’s going on in the whole “fatshion” scene is very riot grrl!!

So, I just decided to wear what I want.  And what I wanted to wear is this super cute, pink plaid diner style dress.  I think it definitely nods to the era, which is probably why I bought it in the first place.

You all know I don’t wear a ton of colour.  So this dress is not something I rock often, I have to be in the mood, but goshdarnit, it is cute! I liked to give it a bit more edge with the knee socks and platform boots.  I also couldn’t find my black cardi I was going to wear, but my husbands showed up in the search, so I wore his instead! riot grrl // margot meanieriot grrl // margot meanie

did you listen to any riot grrl music? were you into the scene or was it before your time, like me?  Below is a quick documentary on riot grrl, it’s 39 minutes long, but once you start you won’t want to stop it!

monochrome & lens flare // margot meanie

There is no colour in this post, other than the lens flare {look out JJ Abrams!} so the name of this post is misleading, the words are lyrics from a song that is often playing in the back of my mind,

“your favourite colour is that of red wine, which leads me to your favourite past time”

If you scroll to the bottom, the song is ready to play.  It’s pretty mellow.

This is just a simple black and white outfit.  I’m dying to get my hands on a couple black blazers.  I really want a nice cropped one, a sturdy basic one, as well as a long line blazer, a tuxedo blazer and a long line sleeveless blazer.  But for now, my draped cardigan will have to do.

Here are a few of the blazers I’ve been lusting after

shirt dress // margot meanie

There is something about a dress that can make it look like you put a lot of thought and effort into creating an outfit, when really, you just threw it on.

Today I am rocking one of my fav pieces to wear, the shirt dress.

This particular shirt dress is from Ross, I can’t remember if it’s from the one in downtown Seattle or downtown Portland.  I always seem to have luck in Ross, I will almost always find something and it will be dirt cheap.  I believe this dress was $13.

Whenever I’m in the states, I make an effort to find a Ross or Marshalls, as they usually have cheap plus items, though the selections in the Seattle and Portland store where significantly smaller then the massive selections and finds to that of the Ross on the Las Vegas strip {that store is CRAZY, I once bought 3 Betsey Johnson purses for $5-15 each and got two cocktail dresses, one was $11 and one was on sale for $7…is that not ridiculous?!!}

But back to this dress.  This is a shirt dress and I just love how versatile this style can be.  It makes a lovely daytime dress, can be professional looking for an office or an interview and can be jazzed up with some jewelry and some bangin shoes for a dinner out.

I usually opt to leave the top buttons undone on this, but I was feeling it all buttoned up the other day.  I also like the straps to hold the sleeves up if you choose to roll them up, but there is a nice double button detail if you choose to wear the sleeves down.

I’m also wearing my New Look Inspire waterfall jacket {from last year, here’s a similar one} which you have seen on me oodles of times now.  It’s just a perfect jacket, especially for Vancouver.  Here I am in the middle of January and this was all the jacket I needed for our weather lately.  I like that I can layer a hoodie or sweater easily underneath to warm it up and it still looks rad!

ASOS curve fit & flare coat and ASOS curve pleated leggings // margot meanieTo be honest, it wasn’t actually cold enough to be wearing my winter coat.  It’s been a pretty balmy winter here.  We’ve had some chilly nights and we had a day or two of snow back in November, but it wasn’t more than a slight dusting.

Often when people hear I’m in Canada they hope I’m keeping warm, which is kinda funny as that is exactly why I moved to Vancouver on the Pacific coast away from the freezing temperatures of Calgary just on the other aide of the Rocky mountains.  Vancouver has very mild winters, though they are wet ones.  Sometimes the wet seeps into your bones and 0°C can feel a whole lot colder.

But this year hasn’t had the thermometer drop below 5°very often, in fact, when I took these photos, it was 11°C {52°F}!

I just couldn’t resist grabbing some photos though!  I’ve been sick for the better part of a month now and I’m finally feeling back on track.

So while I was feeling better I kind of forced my husband to take photos.  He’s such a trooper, as he’s not feeling as well as I am yet, but he still managed to photograph three different outfits for me all while I got my bossy pants on telling him what I wanted photographed and how I wanted them framed.

He’s pretty wonderful!

Though it is not very cold out, it does get a bit chilly at night, which is when I would normally wear this coat, but nighttime does not make for good photos.

Here I am wearing my ASOS curve fit & flare coat and my ASOS curve pleated leggings.  This pair of leggings is about two years old now, so they’ve lost all of their leathery look they had when I first got them, but I still love them to bits {like literally, I will wear them until they fall part!}.  Though it is great that they have been a staple in the curve line so I really should get on buying a couple of back up pairs!

The shoes are thrifted and totally fabulous! These photos don’t quite capture it, but they are faux suede with mirco sparkle buttons attaching the straps…they are simply divine.

currently coveting…Eloquii

For 2015, I want to step up my style game.

I really want to hone it and find a focus.  I have always been a bit all over the map, I self confess to being a chameleon, but I really think it’s time to mature my style and wear the things I really love.

I think I did a good job last year, but I want to keep pushing.

For a long time, I was too scared to wear what I craved and opted for safe, fat girl style.  Now, there is nothing wrong with that, it’s just through blogging, I have really found my confidence and I feel like all those things that I would admire from afar and wish I had the guts, gumption and events to wear things to are not so far fetched and not so intimidating anymore.

Which leads me to today’s post.

I’ve heard spades on how excellent Eloquii is and I briefly popped over to the site when they were fresh up.  I had a peek around, found some lovely items, and for some reason, hadn’t returned.

It’s probably because I feel so comfortable with shopping my go to’s {ASOS & forever21}.   But 2014 was so full of new brands launching and myself discovering new designers, shops and brands that it seems completely wrong to keep shopping just the same old stand by’s {even though I’ve racked up massive wishlists on them both recently}.  I really want to expand my horizons, experiment and support new brands as well as some indie designers.

I decided to pop on over to Eloquii and HOLY SHIZZBALLS I fell in love with sooo many items!!

As I said, I want to focus my style a bit more, and part of that is I want to master the art of monochrome layering.  I am a massive fan of Stephanie from Faiiint and she is an all black, head to toe, layering grandmaster!

I know the key to making a full, head to toe, all black or monochrome outfit a success and not just drab is textures and that is what I am after this year.

Eloquii has the tools I need!

I adore the limited palette of items I picked out, everything in black, white or grey.  Some may see this as drab, but I see possibility! You can always throw in one colour and it gives a mighty loud pop to any look.

But I don’t think a pop of colour will be all that necessary as the textures are so perfect.  Laser cut, metallics, fringe, draping,  knits, faux leather, the right mix of these and it will have a hefty impact!

Some of these items are true statement pieces, while others are beautifully rethought basics, which make them look ultra posh.

Eloquii’s price point is higher than I normally spend, but I also look at these as more investment pieces and not throw away fashion.  I truly think I could get a few years worth of wear out of these pieces and not just a couple of seasons.

But they are not without there deals and steals as well! Their sale section is stocked with drastically reduced items, {a few of them are in this list} and they currently have a promo going where if you buy three items, on sale or not, they are giving 50% off!!

I have not had much of a budget for shopping since I left the tattoo shop, but I’m really hoping I can manage to pick up a few items with that 50% off promo soon!

{Edit: some items have sold out already and the links are dead!}

Have you shopped with Eloquii yet?  Or are there any pieces you’re feeling here or on the site?  Let me know!

hmmm.. my thoughts on Target’s new Designer collection

lilly-pulitzer-target-924x462

Target and a slew of top plus size bloggers were giddy with the announcement today about a new designer collection that will be rolling out into stores and online April 19th.

The newest designer collection will be Lilly Pulitzer for Target and it is aimed to be a fun, bright, summer resort line that will be including accessories, housewares and clothing...that will be offered in sizing up to a 3x or 26w!

If you follow Chasity of Garnerstyle, you will know of her open letter to Target and her boycott of them after they released their last designer collection and how she was fed up of plus sizes being excluded.

The good news is, they listened, and it seems like they’re treating this line as a peace offering of sorts.  The bad news is, and this is just my interpretation after reading Chastity’s post today about the line, is that we need to show Target we are here to buy it or else they won’t be offering this chance to us again.

But what if we don’t like it?

The inclusion of plus in this collection is great!  But it also sticks us in a hard place.  We want more of these opportunities, but what if the collection fails to appeal to some of our sensibilities?  I want these collections to move forward while including a plus size range, but if I can’t see myself wearing the items from this ONE collection, and I don;t buy it, I’ll never be offered anything like this again??!

I’d want to vote with my wallet, but buying something I’d never wear just to give a huge corporation my cash for a place card to be a repeat shopper in the future seems hollow.

I hate when we’re placed between a rock and a hard place.  It’s like being in a “take this or you’ll never be offered a nice thing again” situation.  Doesn’t that almost seem abusive?

There may be pieces I like, I haven’t seen everything yet, but in all honesty, I am not a bright, summer-y, pattern loving girl. {GASP!}.

And I know I’m not the only fashion loving plus girl who will feel the same way.

Another point of contention from me is the plus size range will be sold online exclusively.

Once again, plus size women are relegated to having to shop from home, guess their sizing/fit and wait dutifully by the door for a package to arrive, while straight size girls get to try the items on for fit on launch day and walk out the front door of Target, happy with their new pieces.

  • No waiting
  • No guessing
  • No worrying it won’t fit and you might have to return it.

I’m sure I’m not the only one getting sick of having to do 99.9% of my shopping online.

Why are forced to shop this way?!!

I kind of went on a rant in Chasity’s comment section and realised, I should really be sharing this here as well and start a discussion with you.

My ultimate take away from reading Chastity’s post today is that she,  Nicolette Mason and I think Gabi Gregg, {based off of some instagram photos I believe I saw a while back} are, I hope, going to be involved with them somehow at some point.

That, is something I really want to see!

So what are you thoughts?  How do you feel about this line? Do you think you’ll be buying it.  How do you feel about plus size shoppers being placed in this tricky position?

twenty fourteen: a love letter…of sorts

Dear 2014,

You were an interesting year, though that can be said about all years, I suppose.  when you were kind, you were exceedingly kind and when you were cruel you really hit me where it hurt.

But overall, you pushed me.  Sometimes I struggled, but I think, mostly I flourished and I thank you for what I have learned.

I saw a big change in my professional life, which is still resolving itself.  As sad as I was about losing that part of my identity, {working within the body mod “industry”}, which was a big blow, it forced me away from my comfortable rut.  I wasn’t going anywhere with it, just remaining stagnant, only increasingly bitter with ownership and their lack of care.  With them closing up shop, it made me look at who I was and who I wanted to be and how I want to be living my life.  I’m still working on it, but I’m getting there and happier.

Knowing I have a partner that’s always got my back and wants me to flourish as I figure it all out is something I could not be more grateful for.  Mister Meanie, you are my rock and the bees knees!

I lost someone close to me, and that was the deepest cut.  That one just leaves a scar.  Though I think it might still be an open wound.

But on the flip side, I have friends who are regaining their health after fight tooth & claw, which is wonderful and I am so happy to see them continue on to their new, different and promising lives.

2014, you blessed me with this blog.  When I started this thing September of last year {well, September 2013 as I’m late with this post}, I was not entirely sure where it would take me.

What I didn’t realise was I was strapping on wings.

I have made friends globally and I have gotten over a lot of my shyness {well in cyber land at least, let’s hope that transfers over to in person as well} I started off as a lurker, peepin’ and creepin’ on blogs and bloggers I admired.  After a while I started to make comments here and there and with opening up, I found many kindred spirits.

The people I have met this year have inspired me, supported me and become my colleagues as well as friends.  They have spurred me on to do bigger and better things.  I am so happy to have gotten to know you all.

Overall, 2014, you took  me out of my comfort zone.  And I am so thankful for that. I had many successes linked to this blog, most of which I outlined in my 1st year blogiversay post, but projects, events and features galore happened this year and it was fantastic! I took fashion risks I wouldn’t have done in 2013 and I don’t really regret any of them! I hope to continue this well into the future.

My hopes and goals for 2015 are to keep putting myself out there.  I want to continue to push forward, I want to refine myself.  I want to refine my blog {I have a lot of ‘housekeeping’  I’d like to implement as well as finally make the switch to wordpress.org.}  I want to take some classes.  I want to start my duolingo french lessons again, I was getting pretty good.  {if you are interested in learning a new language, I strongly suggest duolingo, it’s a free app and helps with speaking, reading and writing in new languages.} I want to learn and do and create.

So goodbye, 2014.  You have changed me, I’m looking forward to how I can change 2015. I leave you with some of my favourite looks from the past year and some of the bloggers who have become dear to me!

Happy New Year you lovely beasts!
