I left my heart in Portland pt 1

Happy New Years y’all!! As you can see, I am sooo behind on posts. I had a whole slew of great ideas to ring in the new year, but I got busy planning and preparing for my plus size blogger getaway to Portland, while also running and participating in the #rebelliousselflove challenge on instagram AND I had a couple articles to write for a new up and coming print magazine called FabUplus!

{ below is a few snippets from the challenge! }

I tells ya, this year has been off the hook already! But at the same time strangely surreal.

I think the world at large is still wondering what he hell has been going on with such a terrible rash of influential artists passing away all so suddenly. And it’s left us all reflective, which is fairly common for this time of year, but it’s just been so heavy this month.

Anyways… onto brighter topics!

I’m not sure if y’all know, but my Aussie alternative plus size blogger boo, Kobi, has been stateside for the past six months to study and travel. Once I knew she was coming it was immensely apparent we needed to figure out how to get together.

Naturally her schedule was jam packed as she needed to make the most of her visit. She has made so many friends online over the course of her blogging career that she had meet ups and travel plans all over the continent.

At first we had hoped to get together in my town of Vancouver so I could show her around but after looking at her schedule, we were beginning to realise that just wasn’t going to be possible.

After a fortuitous comment on facebook about plus size shopping in Portland made by Shawna, designer and owner of one of my fav indie plus brands Chubby Cartwheels, we came to a decision, we would meet in Portland!

Portland is one of my hands down favourite cities to visit. In fact, I have gone almost every year for the past 5 years.

The date was set and plans have been in the making for months!

Not only was I going to get the chance to hug my fav fiery ginger, but I was also going to get to finally meet Shawna and my really close pal and plus size model, Katana Fatale!

I was practically vibrating I was so dang excited!

We ended up booking a charming airbnb that suited our needs perfectly. It was situated in one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Portland { just off Hawthorne } and also just happened to have a hot tub!! { two of my favourite words placed together in the English language! } Katana also ended up staying with us for the entirety of the weekend for maximum bonding time.

Our first night in town was a whirlwind of fun fat girl antics! We went for karaoke with Shawna, Katana, Kobi and myself, along with Claire Doody, designer and owner of Copper Union, as well as Coco Madrid, a rad local dj and plus size instagrammer that caught my heart long ago with her participation on #alternativecurves.

We sang a good portion of the night away, while taking plum saki jello shots and singing to everything from Ace is Base to Linkin Park!

Best photo of the evening? Perhaps! 💜🙌🏻 @copperunion. 🎤🎤 #pdxindieplus

After Karaoke, we stopped for some wicked selfies and popped into another bar to say hello to a DJ friend of Coco’s. But since Friday was an early day for me { I was up at 4am to bus down } I was fairly pooped and kinda drunk so we opted to leave the bar and head to our bnb for hot tub and bubbles. The get home we ended up having a eventful and hilariously wild lyft trip back. I’d describe it, but I’m 100% sure it was illegal, so I’ll leave your imaginations to run wild.

Saturday ended up being a recovery day for most of us, but Kobi was out the door for a photo shoot with local kick ass photographer, Beth Olsen.

Katana and I were left to our own devices. We had originally planned to have a proper photo shoot with friend and photographer Kyle Lang, but Kyle was bedridden with sicky sickness, the real kind, not the hangover kind.

We were tired and a little hungover, but we couldn’t waste our only day to shoot together so we dug through my clothes, donned some duds, made ourselves up real purdy and proceeded to take photos of each other in the beautiful yard of our bnb. We eventually had to call Mister Meanie outside to take a few shots of us together too!

We solemnly swear we are up to no good #mischiefmanaged #chubrubhottubclub #PortlandRadFatBabeFest2016

Since I don’t want to ramble on too incredibly long, I’ll end this here at the halfway mark. Keep tuned for Part 2, which has so much awesomeness, I can’t wait to share with you!

But let me close with this,  it was so surreal to finally see my friends materialize right before my eyes! Being able to hug and behold my friends in 3D form made me teary and I kept feeling like I wanted to pinch myself. It was so lovely and so natural. I do not have enough words to say how much I adored every girl I have made friends with online and I met in person this weekend!

Also, why is Portland the center for cool fat girls? I’m glad I live so close, because I finally feel like I belong to a tangible community of ass kicking plus size blogger babes.

It’s a fabulous weekend get away and even better f you can stretch that into a long weekend. I find 4 days is usually sufficient to get the vibe and do most of my favourite activities. But now that I have friends there, I see I’ll either need to visit more often or for stay for a full week. Maybe even both come summer time!
